Better than assumptions:- Communication

Image
CAD, Communication across disciplines has always been a rejoicing experience for me. I never see this class to be a place where I work academically as a student but I believe it is a platform for me to express my thoughts clearly and receive informative feedback for it. I sense the freedom of speech that's offered to me in this class where the environment is unbiased and encouraging towards self-betterment at almost everything. For students enrolling in CAD with Dr. Graff, it would be a worthful opportunity to develop life skills especially when it comes to communication. Communication is the tact that allows people to interact and express ideas vividly and helps others perceive you better.  Communication works for those who work at it -John Powell Rhetoric as a term that was introduced from this class has helped me get more keen on it and have a consciousness of it in my day to day life. After being a part of this class I have started interpreting things differe

New Concepts within Writing

Image
Within my CAD class, I've been taught an extensive amount of strategies that I can apply to my experiences outside of class, whether it be a different class or a real life situation. I have only recently learned things like writing a paper to cater to a specific audience. Dr. Graff mentioned the idea of writing a paper not to simply complete the assignment, but to communicate something to an audience. These are concepts that I have only been introduced to recently, yet they have had a big impact at the way I look at literature and writing.                 Since learning these concepts I have changed the way I look at papers, whether I am reading them or writing them. I have noticed I have been more analytical of texts like articles or papers, along with looking at the words authors use, and the context in which they use them. I have learned that authors chose words precisely to send a message, which is another concept that I have only recently been aware of an

Julians 2nd Transfer Blog

Julian Moore                    Moore 1 Professor Graff CAD101A November 10, 2019 Transfer blog A skill I have greatly improved on since taking CAD101A is annotating and summarizing text. Throughout my high school experience I would always read what was assigned then move on having to rely on my memory to comprehend the readings, at most I would highlight words in the text I found interesting. I found this strategy to be challenging at times to understand complex readings. Coming into college I was not proficient in annotating and make correlations from different parts of readings which is something I have improved immensely on and now use in my other classes. When I am reading my textbook for Intro Into Environmental Science (ENVS201) it is really important I am synthesizing what I read because we are quizzed on it weekly. I was doing poorly on these quizzes till I started using reading strategies from CAD101A. Whe

Labor Logs and its benefits

Image
In reading and writing class I have learned many things. One that I feel has helped me not only in this class but also in my other classes is my labor log. My labor log has helped me to learn where and when I work and read the best. For example, I have learned that when I work in the library, for one, I actually work, and two, I tend to consistently have a scale 5 focus. In reflecting upon my labor log, I tend do most of my work just before it is due. But I do my best work in the mornings or at night in the library.          I think that a benefit of keeping track through your labor log is being able to identify patterns and be able to reflect upon them and fix them. And this can be done in all classes. In my math class, I usually start my online assignments right before they're due and sometimes I am unable to do them at all then I am stuck with no help. So it is helpful to see that I need to break this habit.

Creating a Link Between Classes

Image
Creating a Link Between Classes.       Creating a link between our different classes as college students can, at first, seem like a daunting task. However, it can be as simple as just transferring the material we have learned in one class, to the next. In this way, we can approach our classes as though they are all connected by similar themes.      In one of my classes (FYS) we were assigned to look up sources for a presentation we were going to give. Now, when my professor told me to look up sources, I did not have a clue where to start, the first idea that popped into my head was to search in Google. However, the following day, I entered my CAD101A class where we were taught how to look up and find peer reviewed, scholarly sources through the CSUMB Library's One Search, which I immediately thought would be perfect for my FYS. Since then, I have used this resource in every single one of my classes and this just shows how I have created a link and transferred learning materia
